Understanding Respiratory Support: The Ultimate Guide to Ventilator Care
Respiratory support is a critical aspect of caring for patients with respiratory failure. Ventilator care, in particular, is a complex and often misunderstood topic.
Understanding the basics of respiratory support can help patients and their families better navigate the care process. Here are five key things Triboro Center wants you to know about ventilator care:
What is a Ventilator? A ventilator is a machine that helps patients breathe by delivering air (and oxygen) to the lungs through a breathing tube.
It can support patients with respiratory failure, such as pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
A ventilator delivers air through a tube placed in the patient’s airway. It’s programmed to deliver a certain amount of air at a specific rate and pressure to help the patient breathe. The settings can be adjusted based on the patient’s needs.
Who Needs a Ventilator? Ventilators are used for patients who have difficulty breathing independently due to a chronic condition or a sudden illness or injury.
Patients on a ventilator may need it for a few days, weeks, or longer, depending on the underlying cause and the patient’s response to treatment.
Risks and Complications: While a ventilator can be life-saving, it can pose risks and complications. These include infections, lung damage, and problems with the breathing tube.
Healthcare providers take steps to minimize these risks and closely monitor patients on a ventilator.

Triboro Center earns prestigious Target: BP Gold + honor.

Triboro Center has been recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Medical Association (AMA) for its commitment to helping improve blood pressure (BP) control rates among the patient populations it serves, earning Gold + level recognition as part of the 2022 Target: BP™ Recognition Program.
The Participation award recognizes practices that have committed to reducing the number of adult patients with uncontrolled BP.
Hypertension (high BP) is a leading risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, and preventable death in the U.S. In addition, there are 116 million U.S. adults living with high BP and less than half of those people have their BP under control – making both diagnosing and effectively managing hypertension critical.
“We are proud that Triboro Center has received this great award from the American Heart Association for this year’s Target BP Recognition Program,” said Kenny Rozenberg, CEO of Centers Health Care. “The commitment to save lives as we continue the journey to fight hypertension demonstrates our dedication to our residents and their families.”
Target: BP is a national collaboration between the AHA and the AMA aimed at reducing the number of Americans who suffer from heart attacks and strokes each year by urging physician practices, health systems and patients to prioritize BP control. The initiative aims to help health care organizations improve BP control rates through use of the evidence-based AMA MAP BP™ quality improvement program, and recognizes organizations committed to improving blood pressure control.
Centers Health Care is committed to improving BP control rates throughout its facilities.
How Much Calcium and Vitamin D Should I Be Getting Daily?
Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common vitamin or mineral deficiencies in the United States, as it’s believed that around 35% of adults aren’t getting enough vitamin D.
While calcium and vitamin D aren’t the same, they work together. Vitamin D allows your body to absorb calcium, and without enough calcium, your bones can weaken over time—especially for women, who are prone to osteoporosis.
Triboro Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has details on how much vitamin D and calcium you should be getting daily to keep your levels where they need to be.
More Is Needed as You Age
For women age 50 or younger, 1,000 milligrams of calcium and 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D is recommended daily. While the vitamin D should be bumped up to 800 IU starting at age 71, calcium intake for women should increase to 1,200 mg daily starting at age 51.
For men, these parameters (1,000 mg of calcium and 600 IU of vitamin D) are recommended until age 70. Starting at 71, they should be bumped up to 1,200 mg and 800 IU, respectively.
Good Sources of Calcium and Vitamin D
First off, spending between 30 minutes and one hour in the sun daily can help reach the vitamin D requirement. If you’re in an area that doesn’t get sun year-round, consult your doctor over whether you should take a supplement during cold-weather months.
Low-fat and nonfat dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese are fortified with vitamin D and contain lots of calcium—typically 300 mg per 1 cup. Having three or four servings will get you to the required amount right there.
Other good sources include tofu, fortified cereal, fortified orange juice, soy milk, or rice milk. This can help people who are lactose intolerant still get the calcium and vitamin D they need from food.

3 Resources for Senior Drivers to Stay on the Road Safely
Seniors are staying on the road longer than ever nowadays, but many may not be aware of eroding skills that could make them a danger behind the wheel. Nearly 20% of fatal crashes involve someone age 65 or older. In encouraging news, however, the death rate of those 65 and older from vehicle crashes has gone down between 3 and 15%.
Educational programs can be partially responsible for this drop. Triboro Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing is bringing you information from AAA’s senior driving site about a professional assessment that can help provide honest feedback to older drivers and also get them familiar with safety features they may not have realized existed.
What is a Professional Driving Assessment?
There are generally two types of professional driving assessments: driving skills evaluations and clinical driving assessments.
A driving skills evaluation will strictly focus on your performance in the car and then offer recommendations on any further training.
When Should I get a Driving Skills Evaluation?
- You think that your driving skills are diminishing.
- You’ve experienced an increase in near-misses or minor “fender-bender” type accidents.
- People close to you have suggested that you should cut back on driving or stop entirely.
- You have a medical condition like poor vision, dementia, seizures, or a sleep disorder that could cause a problem behind the wheel.
The driving skills evaluation will show if you are still fit to remain behind the wheel, if you should receive specialized driver’s training, or get a recommendation for a clinical driving assessment by a specialist.
What is a Clinical Driving Assessment?
This person will use a clinical driving assessment to pinpoint the exact causes of a decline in driving ability. It could reveal that you can continue to drive without restrictions, recommend extra training or vehicle modifications, or if you should stop driving entirely.
Driving skills evaluations typically cost between $100 and $200, and you can find a driving school in your area via the AAA or a simple internet search.

6 Items That You May Be Better Off Buying Used
The key when buying used items is knowing when to buy used. While you may be skeptical of buying used clothes, furniture, or even a used car, there are many other items where there aren’t as many potential drawbacks and you can end up saving big.
Triboro Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at six items that you might be better off buying used.
- Technology
This is a great way to save, but you’ll want to make sure you’re buying fully refurbished devices from either a licensed retailer or direct from the manufacturer, such as Apple or Samsung. Mobile phones, tablets, and computers can offer significant savings, but if you buy from a private seller, you can’t be sure that all of the data (and potentially malware) were removed and wiped clean before it was sold again.
- Hand Tools
Hand tools are not only durable, there’s also a good chance that ones made 20, 30, or more years ago are of better quality than you can buy today. These are popular finds at flea markets, garage sales, and especially estate sales.
- Office Furniture
With so many offices downsizing due to more staff working from home permanently, plenty of office furniture needs a new home. The website www.cortfunitureoutlet.com has a big online display.
- Baby Items
Since babies grow so quickly, many items get little use before they grow out of them—whether it’s clothes, toys, or things like bouncy chairs or bassinets. One thing you shouldn’t buy used, however, are car seats because they have expiration dates and you don’t know whether they were damaged or tampered with.
- Fitness Equipment
Like hand tools, fitness equipment doesn’t really show signs of age. Garage sales and sites like Craig’s List or Facebook Marketplace are the way to go here.
- Gift Cards
Many people get gift cards to places they’ll never use. If they don’t re-gift them, they can sell them to websites like Gift Card Bin and Gift Card Granny. These sites then re-sell the cards at a discounted rate.
